Are You Prepared?

As we prepare for the inevitable, the decisive factor in our survival will be the decisions we make months or even years before disaster. More important than the weapons we arm ourselves with, is the knowledge we are armed with going into the zombie apocalypse. Basic survival provisions must be kept. Paramount among these is water. Several gallons per person should be secured in the event of a protracted survival situation. Secondly, an abundant and well balanced stockpile of non-perishable foods must be maintained.
Keep in mind that under current conditions, most people have less than a week's supply of food and water on hand (including what you find in stores) should society immediately collapse. Above all things, you do not want to find yourself competing against the unprepared masses in a worst case scenario.

Take serious considerations into your household's survival requirements and stockpile dedicated emergency food and water reserves in an out of the way corner of your domicile. In preparing in this manner, you will have the luxury of preparing your stockpile item by item, rather than bearing the burden of attempting to prepare for your survival when it is too late.

  1. Rations are dependent on your plan. If you're holed up in a secure location you can stock pile all kinds of food (but not frozen or stuff that needs cooking as power could well go out in the post zombie era). If you've on the move dried foods are better and taking courses to prepare yourself for having to hunt for food and prepare it without eating parts of an animal that are toxic or indigestible.

Meat can be tenderised and semi cooked with pressure and heat without cooking. In the past some soldiers that rode horses would put raw meat in puches undder thier saddle and after a day of riding the meat would be tenderised and digestible.

Personally I'm thinking of learning more about gardening and wild foods that can be foraged for to prevent issues with scurvy and the like.

  2. Foraging is a great skill to study up on. Knowing your area's indigenous edibles will greatly enhance your nutrition, not to mention it will be a huge moral booster. After all, pre-prepared food is only going to last so long. At some point it will become critical to hunt, trap, or forage your food supply.

Sustainable agriculture could pose huge problems initially. Namely, the time and space required to produce sustainable crops could be tremendous. This is not considering the need to secure the crops from outsiders or whether or not Mother Nature is willing to play nice...

    Great Points

  3. I've been doing some further research into this and it turns out parsnips could be one of the best foods to try and grow. They're a good source of carbs and have high natural sugars and most importantly can be left in the ground indefinitely without going bad, in fact leaving them in until after the frist frost or snow can actually improve the flavour. So no storage worries and easy to grow. Yay parsnips!!!

Also been considering issues or what to grow once settled in the post zombie world. In your fortified barracks you may want to consider Tea Tree and Aloe if you can as their anticeptic and antibiotic qualities could be useful in a world without trips to the pharmacy.
